Our Victories:

GCC has convened the Northeast Ohio Medicaid Expansion Coalition, a collaboration of over 30 different hospitals, health centers, mental health and substance abuse providers, advocates, consumer groups, and other stakeholders to speak with one voice from Northeast Ohio about the importance of Medicaid expansion.  The coalition’s work in 2013 has the potential to result in the expansion of life-saving health insurance coverage to 600,000-800,000 low-income uninsured Ohioans.  

In 2012, GCC organized to support the Cuyahoga County Health and Human Services levy, which was successfully renewed on March 6, 2012.   This crucial levy ensured $222 million in funding for health care, senior citizen, child welfare, and education programs.  GCC signed up nearly 2,000 early absentee voters in our congregations, and recruited 200 volunteers to encourage their neighbors to vote, staff phone banks, and work the polls on Election Day.  

Other Industrial Areas Foundation affiliates have achieved major victories in the area of health care including:

• Initiating and pushing through the 2006 bi-partisan universal health care law in Massachusetts, which has provided health insurance coverage for over 500,000 people and became the blueprint for the national health care law.
• Changing Illinois law to require that young adults be allowed to stay on their parents’ health insurance plan until age 26.
• Enrolling 5,000 low-income residents of Howard County, MD in an under-utilized public insurance program.
